Atari Anniversary Advance (GBA)
This video was captured using the actual game on an actual Gamecube Game Boy Advance Player. Real gameplay of this game is kinda scarce on You Tube because this game cannot be properly emulated by any emulator as of yet.
Yay. It's Atari's 40th Birthday. Let's all celebrate that video game crash they helped create. No wait........let's celebrate the ever uninspiring visuals and game play of Atari's most popular game console, THE 2600! Well, if that doesn't get you all excited, let's celebrate that underrated gem of a console called the Atari Jaguar that had all those must have games like.........like.........YEAH! whatever. No I have a better idea. Let's celebrate when Atari was at it's best, the arcades.
Atari for me doesn't bring the fondest memories for me mostly because even when the 2600 was cutting edge and all we had, I still thought it sucked. However when I finally got to play Atari's arcades games, I found what made Atari so great. Their arcade games were great back then, and still great today. This GBA cart is an excellent handful of Atari's greatest hit arcades.
First is my favorite game in this collection, Asteroids. For the most part it is a faithful conversion to the arcade. It's not the sharpest looking version due to the GBA's low resolution, but the gameplay is perfect. Battle Zone's controls are a bit odd as the L and R buttons don't do anything to operate your tank other than shoot your turret. Not the best, but workable and still fun. Centipede is absolutely perfect. Missile Command again is perfect other than the fact that I infinitely suck at it. Super Breakout is extremely frustrating as the controls are still kinda course due to the Dpad. L and R move your........bar thingy slow as where the Dpad moves the bar thingy at medium speed and both the Dpad and L and R buttons together move the bar thingy fast. No matter how much you practice the controls are always clunky feeling. The hardest part is trying to hit the ball at the start. Overall I think I've almost managed to clear the first screen. Almost. Not the best game on the collection, but the others easily make up for it.
The last actual game is Tempest. Unfortunately I was not able to capture any full attempt but my first round which as you can see was terrible. ONLY on the GBA Player for the Gamecube does this game lock up. I have played Tempest on my actual GBA and it plays just fine with no issues. Alot of times what happens with emulated games is that they don't seem to work well with console emulation, or with hardware other than the original hardware it was intended for. This is only speculation. As a matter of fact all the games on this cart play much smoother and better on a actual GBA. I noticed that Asteroids had some slowdown that is not present while playing it on a GBA. The bottom line is do not buy this game to play on your GBA Player. Play it only on a GBA.
The last feature of this cart is the Atari Trivia which I suck at. Yeah.....it's trivia. Overall this is a great compilation. It's worth it just to have Asteroids and Tempest alone on the go.
