This video was captured using the actual game on an actual Nintendo 64. Pre-qualifying and some text conversation was removed for your consideration and enjoyment. Just to be clear there is absolutely no relation between the Super Nintendo game Stunt Race FX and Stunt Racer 64.

This is one of the most obscure games I own. It's rare and obscure because this game was one of those that could only be rented from Blockbuster. From what I understand the game was scrapped by the developer and then they decided to finish the game and then release it for rental only. I don't understand this logic, but weird stuff happens sometimes. This game was developed by Boss Game Studios which were the same people who brought you Top Gear Rally and World Driver Championship. With it came things that were typical of Boss games which are weak and distorted sound along with some weird controls that require some getting used to.

I know that there are quite a few out there who sing praises for this game because it is rare and obscure and the asking price continues to climb on this game. I've had people who own the game that it's the best racing game on the N64. Now I'm not one of those people who thinks a game is the greatest just because it's rare and obscure and because I own it. As a matter of fact when I popped this game in for the first time I thought for sure that I had made a mistake on buying it. I wasn't too worried though as I'm sure that I could have more than gotten my money back selling it off since I only paid 10 bucks for it.

Here are my thoughts. This game is not even close to easy to control. It takes quite a bit of patience adapting to the rather floaty controls. The graphics are pretty good as they are nice and clean, but they won't win any awards. Like World Driver Championship the game does have a letterbox hi-res mode, but just like almost all games that have this feature on the N64 it suffers from dropping frames especially around turns. Honestly the game looks good enough without being in hi-res and runs silky smooth in normal-res. The sound reminds me alot of World Driver Championship with it's distorted and crackle pop sounds.

So why do I still have this game? Well, the same reason why I still have World Driver Championship. After you get past the learning curve and the semi distorted sound the game proves to be quite fun to play. The professional reviewers kinda compare this game to Rush with it's simple tricks you can do, but I rather enjoy this game much more than Rush. The tricks are simpler, the tracks are not as open as Rush's are and you acquire money by collecting it on the road and performing tricks to upgrade or buy a new, faster ride. It's a well balanced game.

So is this the best racing game on the N64? I would say no. Is this game worth the current asking prices on Ebay? Well they seem to range quite a bit at the time of this video so I will say that I wouldn't pay anymore than 20 bucks for this game. 20 bucks is kinda stretching it, but I am taking into consideration it's rarity and the fact that I love racing games. 10 bucks was the perfect price point for me. I found this game in a local game store, not on Ebay. I probably wouldn't have even picked it up if I hadn't come across it in the wild like that. So I would say if you never get to play it, you're not really missing out on too much. There currently is no emulator that can play this game yet, but you can play it on a real N64 using a flash cart like the Everdrive I believe if you can't track down the actual catridge. I can recommend this game only for those who are cool with learning curves. Those who want easy to control racing games should stay away from this game.
