Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation: Why I Chose Shadowheart
I love CRPGs that let you spend an hour in character creation prior to starting a new game, and it's looking like Baldur's Gate 3 is hitting that spot. I had a lot of fun sifting through the origin stories of the different characters, and I had trouble picking because a few different narratives spoke to me. I like playing characters who fight for their freedom or to be released from bondage, and Karlach and Astarian both kind of fit that bill because they are on a mission to kill their demonic masters to get revenge for a long period of enslavement and to win a better life for themselves. But I ultimately did not select them; I went for Shadowheart instead.
Shadowheart is a cleric whose backstory is that she's on a divine mission of such great secrecy that she wiped her own memory and no longer remembers anything about its purpose, beyond the fact that she has to deliver an artifact to Baldur's Gate on behalf of her goddess Shar. And to me, that's a mission that's all about freedom: Is Shadowheart bound to fulfill the promise of her past self, now that she has wiped her memory? And if she learns of her own secret purpose and realizes that her new self finds it abhorrent, is she free to abandon it? I chose Shadowheart because I was excited to answer these questions.
