This video describes why I enjoy leaning into a narrative-free gaming experience in certain action titles like Elden Ring, DOOM Eternal, and Devil May Cry 5. Single-player games like these tend to present themselves as narrative experiences, but playing them can sometimes be more like listening to a song without lyrics than watching a movie. That's what I try to explain in the video. Full transcript below:

"Sometimes I play video games in the way that people listen to music – by which I mean, I’m not really playing for the sake of a plot or story but more just for a mood or a feeling or an imaginative but purely emotional experience.

And that’s why I appreciate games like DOOM Eternal or Devil May Cry or Elden Ring or Dark Souls – it’s very easy to play these games in a way that completely and utterly ignores the plot and just focuses on the mechanics of combat. But that doesn’t mean that you’re just running around in these games like a mindless violence machine – even when you pay zero attention to the story in any of these games and have absolutely no context for why you’re doing what you’re doing, they each nevertheless evoke their own very distinct and imaginative kind of vibe and mood.

I play Elden Ring whenever I want to live in an Elden Ring type of mood, and I play DOOM whenever I'm feeling a little bit metal. I'm just looking for a certain kind of feel. And that’s what I mean when I say that I occasionally play games in the way that people listen to music. Playing a game sometimes feels more like listening to a song than reading a novel or watching a movie."
