DOOM's approach to traversal and movement is part of what makes it so unique as a shooter. This video explains how it relies on mechanics more familiar from aerial dogfighting games (think Ace Combat, Starfox, Rogue Squadron) to define the amazing strategy and feel of movement. Here's a transcript of the video:

"In some ways I think that DOOM Eternal plays a like an aerial dog fighting game like Rogue Squadron or Starfox, and it has to do with the way that movement figures into the core strategy of combat.

The thing about aerial combat is that an airplane or an X-Wing. obviously can’t be stationary when it’s in the sky. So combat is about flying in loops around the play arena, and you attack by making passes at the enemy where you line them up in your sights for a two second window and try to blow it away with one or two precision strikes. And if you miss, well, you’ve got to go fly another loop around the arena and come back from another angle.
But this is exactly what it’s like to play DOOM Eternal. At least on Nightmare difficulty, it’s absolutely imperative that you constantly stay mobile and run laps around an arena, because if you stop in any one place for too long you’re gonna get ganked and exploded by a horde of demons. So you end up navigating the combat arena in the same kind of loops that you’d make in an X-Wing playing Rogue Squadron, by making passes where you land precision strikes but never actually stop and camp out in a single spot. I guess that’s what you call a movement shooter."
