In this chapter, David and his friends return to the basement of Dragonspear Castle, where they find Caelar's advisor, the priest Hephernaan, engaged in some evil ritual; he manages to escape before he is eliminated, but at least the party succeeds in its main goal - poisoning the food and water supplies of the castle defendants. Back in the coalition camp, they find it under siege from the crusaders, and David has to fend off an entire series of attacks before the Flaming Fist is able to regroup and bring the battle back to Dragonspear Castle.
