Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Released in 1984, Bank Panic is six-gun shooting test of your reactions, as you defend the local bank from robberies in an ol' Western town.

The bank has 12 separate entrances, 3 of which are visible at any one time. Your job is to protect customers visiting the bank to make deposits, whilst dealing with masked robbers and bandits who might try to hold up the bank and steal the cash. The gauge at the top of the screen shows doors with people arriving at the bank, so it's best to move position so you can keep an eye on who's arriving at each door. The level is complete when customers have made cash deposits at each of the 12 teller stations, but this is easier said than done.

Shooting robbers as soon as they appear is a valid strategy for keeping the bank safe, but it won't earn you the most points. In fact, shooting a bad guy who hasn't yet drawn his weapon is considered "unfair", so you'll want to wait for them to draw before unloading on them. Taking a bad guy down just as goes for his weapon will earn you a reaction bonus, and even an extra life if you're good enough.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a game this old, but Bank Panic is really quite superb. It's easy to play, yet difficult to master, and the characterisations and graphics are absolutely charming. I love the way the townsfolk tip their hats when entering the bank, and the way people you save occasionally poke their heads back around the door with a bonus to show their gratitude for saving them from a stick-up is a great touch. Don't be put off by its age - give Bank Panic a try, and you're sure to have some fun!

Video Notes

The game has no ending, so I played through 10 levels before ending on stage 11.
