If you want to experience long and arduous action in a simple game, then check out this action-packed shooting game that will put you to the front lines; Battalion Commander 2. The objective in this game is to control your soldier and try to survive as long as you can until you reach the marked location. Shoot the enemies or stab them up close. Rescue allies as well and they will help you in battle. You will gain blue stars as you kill enemies and this will be your experience points. Once you have ranked up, you will have access to new weapons and new allies to be found on the field.

The vertical shooter has been around for ages. Perhaps the most well-known example would be 1942, which is quite possibly the game that really started the ball rolling, so to speak. Battalion Commander 2 follows a similar format, but rather than giving you control of an aircraft going up against waves of enemy aircraft, you're instead the eponymous battalion commander as he (rather questionably strategy-wise) wades through wave after wave of enemy soldiers along a snowy landscape in between rows of trees. Yeah, it does sound a bit strange, but it's still a lot of fun.

At first, Battalion Commander 2 looks like a simple defense shooter, or maybe a platformer. Players will thus be pleasantly surprised with the vertical shooter format that it gives you. What's more, it looks pretty spiffy as well, and makes the pleasant twist even nicer.

The graphics aren't realistic by any stretch of the word, but they're still pretty good. The sprites are all chibi-fied little soldiers who walk around (in a rather floaty manner) the landscape while shooting things. The actual shooting animations are virtually non-existent, but you will see the bullets and explosions clearly on the screen. What's more, with the variety of bad guys that you'll be facing, there's barely a dull moment visually speaking any time in the game. The lack of attack animations not withstanding, the rest of the animations such as explosions, dropping bombs, etc... are all of top quality. And all of those go together rather well with the sound effects and the music, which do a great job of improving the pacing and overall aesthetic of the game.

As aforementioned, the game is a vertical shooter. You'll move up the snowy path and try to get as far as possible. Along the way, enemy troopers will descend upon you not unlike the enemy ships of 1942. Like other vertical shooters, they'll all follow predictable paths and fire at you in such a way as to make it (theoretically) possible to avoid getting hit. As you progress down the path, you'll free allied soldiers who will aid you by firing their own rifles, lobbing grenades, or if you're a horrible, horrible person, by providing convenient meat shields for enemy attacks. Yes, they can be killed by enemy fire, so be careful with them. It's a better idea to hang on to them though, as the extra firepower will enable you to nab more cash which will in turn allow you to get better weapons, better upgrades, and better special attacks.

So go on and give Battalion Commander 2 a shot, you won't regret it!
