Battle Royale is NOT ENOUGH for Halo Infinite
Halo Infinite is the first live service game in the series, it will be supported for 10 years and it launches with a free to play multiplayer, and the full package will be available day one on Game Pass. It's also based on a new engine that allows 343 Industries to create new content faster than ever before, and what we have seen and played, suggests that it may already be by launch, the best Halo game ever, even without the delayed content, which is unfortunate.
With this set-up, Halo Infinite has the potential, over time, to become something greater than anyone has ever imagined, just look at the transformation Halo MCC had in 2 years: that is insane, and we are talking about 6 games with different engines and limitations, so, if you apply this to Halo Infinite, a game of which 343 has full control over, thanks to the new engine, you can easily see why I think it can be colossally explosive. This video is divided in 2 sections, one in which I explain what Halo could gain or lose by adding a Battle Royale, and the other proposing what Halo Infinite could offer INSTEAD of a Battle Royale, let's begin.
What could Halo Infinite gain by adding a Battle Royale? A few more players may surely check it out, but with the free to play multiplayer I really don't see it being as big of a push as the streamers around say. Then, if the game type has traction it will for sure be well popular on Twitch, but beyond this, there's nothing much that we as players get out of it other than the surface impression that the game is popular. On YouTube, Halo is way more watched than on Twitch, in fact, every time a new trailer drops, it often gets top 3 or even first on trending. Now that we've got this out of the way, there are two ways in which a Battle Royale can hurt Halo Infinite: if it fails like other Battle Royale modes of triple A games such as Battlefield V, Fallout 76 or Counter Strike, 343 would have wasted time and resources that could have gone into something new and more exciting. This is “allocation of resources”: developers do not have unlimited time and money to update their games. The OTHER way a Battle Royale can hurt Halo Infinite is similar: if the game type succeeds, there is a chance that 343 will focus mostly on expanding its content, leaving again the other areas of the game in the dust. And by the way, Battle Royale will for sure be created with Halo Infinite's Forge, which would not impact 343's ability to create other types of content, win win.
Okay, now that we now why Battle Royale is not enough for Halo Infinite, what can 343 create instead of it? I have a few ideas, but before those, 343 needs to address a few things about the game that we already know: introduce Forge, Campaign Co-op, Assassinations and Playable Elites, fix the HUD and few minor elements of the game, and then, before completely new content that I want to imagine right now, here with you, listen to this new Firefight mode: make it as customizable as Halo Reach, with custom waves and weapons for the Spartans, then add on top of this Pelicans dropping vehicles, troops, and weapon pods from the sky, fortifications that can be built and destroyed in the style of Gears of War Horde mode, and put everything in big maps also featuring Scarabs and super units, as well as 10 Spartan players, and you've got an apocalyptic version of Firefight. But this is just the tip of the iceberg really, imagine game types with playable Covenant species, such as Grunts, Brutes, Hunters, or even Prelates, or imagine a Battlefield style all out war with drivable super units such as the Halo Wars Vultures, or even multiplayer space battles expanding upon that level of Halo Reach, in the far future there could even be a planetary conquest multiplayer mode in the style of Planetside 2, something like “Take back Harvest from the Covenant, classic throwback”. The possibilities offered by Halo Infinite are truly endless, and if the only thing you can think about for Halo Infinite new content is Battle Royale, you lack imagination. About Forge, leaks have shown that Halo Infinite's Forge features a node system, which means it basically is the closest thing you can think-of to actually programming a game, Halo Infinite Forge will allow to create almost everything, so something as a Battle Royale could easily be done in there.
