This is 5 Facts About Nintendo DS! The name Nintendo DS stands for two different meanings, the first of which is the more obvious: Dual Screen! While Nintendo did produce dual screen consoles in the past with the Game & Watch series, the DS had the peculiarity of the bottom screen being touch capable, which was a huge innovation in 2004! The other meaning of DS was Developer Simplicity: the period in which the Nintendo DS was announced was not the brightest for Nintendo, so, in an effort to interest the most developers possible into making games for the new handheld console, Nintendo based the system off of a processor very similar to the one of their previous console, the Game Boy Advance, in this way it was easier for any game studio to jump-in and make games for the DS, as many developers were already familiar with this type of CPU.

The Nintendo DS is a very durable and resistant system! Some famous climbers brought their Nintendo handheld to the top of Mount Everest in 2005, but despite the cold, altitudes, drops, and all the harsh conditions of such a situation, all the DSes that made the trip were working perfectly afterwords! This can't be said instead for the MP3 players and the Dell PC that joined them in that journey, as those devices did not work after such an intense experience.

The DS took the world by storm, by 2021, it still is BY FAR, the best selling handheld console of all time! It sold 154 million units, and behind it there is the legendary Game Boy, with 118 million units sold. The Nintendo DS is also the second best selling video game console of all time, as the only one that beat it on sales is the PlayStation 2! With just one million units difference, the PlayStation 2 takes the cake for the most sold video game console, scoring 155 million PlayStation 2 units sold.

The original name for the DS was “City Boy”, the intention behind the name was to market the new system towards young adults, which in the mind of Nintendo would have taken the system as they went to work and play in the urban centers every day. This still happened as we saw from the sales numbers, with the difference that people of all ages have enjoyed the entertainment offered by the DS!

The Nintendo DS was not only sturdy against external damage, but also from internal hacking attempts! A loop hole to hack the Nintendo DS was only found in 2020, which allows to play games not natively made for the DS on the system, but it took 16 years for someone to find a way to do this. It also seems that the hack is very difficult to find and it will probably be lost in the mists of time.

It's always nice to look back at old game consoles and the hidden history behind them, especially if it's a console that you owned!
