Bayonetta 2 Bonus 5: Tag Climax Demonstration
At long last, let's explore the brand new co-op mode found in Bayonetta 2, wrapping up my coverage!
So just what is this mode? We've been collecting Verse Cards all game long, but what does it all mean?! Put simply, this is an online co-op mode where you and a friend (or some rando if you're into that) team up to take on enemies. The Verse Cards you gain in the main game represent a given enemy (or group of enemies) to fight. Your main goal is to get through six Verses in sequence, able to bet Halos and increase the challenge of the given Verse (with some crazy stuff happening when you bet the maximum amount!), and should you survive...you make quite the profit! While this IS cooperative, there is a bit of a competitive element too. Each player has their own separate score, and whoever has the highest score in the end gets a win bonus of Halos...even more so if you happened to have bet beforehand!
Now, due to having TWO player characters on-screen at once, some things have been adjusted...namely...our health. You can die FAST in this mode, regardless of who you're fighting, but it's only fair. Speaking of death, should only one die, you have time to save your partner. Get in close to them and pull them back from the icy grip of death! Man, why didn't Bayo try this with Jeanne in the first place?!
I am joined my a good friend of mine, YuuGiJoou here on YouTube. You've seen Jo here on some of my Smash videos. Check Jo's channel out here:

Jo and I actually played over an hour for this session but....guess whaaaaaaat?! Sadly, most of that footage is borked, with some bad desynch going on but oddly...the middle part works fine? There were some goofy things I had to cut, unfortunately. This was Jo's first time with the mode, and my first time fighting with a real person, but by this point we're pretty well used to it.
By and large, every Verse in this mode is nothing new...but there ARE some surprises to be found here! For one, it's possible to play as Balder and Rodin! You'll have to beat special Verses that only pop up randomly in this mode, and only if you beat that Verse and complete a session of Tag Climax. For Balder, you must take on the secret Verse, 13, taking on Balder and Rosa at the same time!
Balder is quite odd. He is armed with his Holy Glaive, and many magic attacks in place of kicks. Many of the attacks he can perform in his boss fights can be seen here. He activates Light Speed when dodging, and can even take on his wolf form to dash. His Umbran Climax has his Glaive sweep wide and far, and he'll summon the Cardinal Virtues for his combo enders, like Bayo's Infernal Weaves. A bit tricky to use, but he's quite fun!
For Rodin, you must beat the hidden verse, 53. There you fight...Rodin himself! It's not NEARLY as hard as when you fight him with the Platinum Ticket though. Rodin is incredibly strong, fighting with just his fists (and some eye beams, here or there)! He can charge up his punches and kicks for more damage, and his Tetsuzanko/Heel Stomp variants are huge area-of-effect attacks. What sets him apart from everyone else is that he lacks a dodge AND a dash. Rather, his "dodge" creates a shield around him momentarily. To my knowledge, there's no way to get off Witch Time or some Bat Within variant for him, so you'll need your partner's help to survive well with him! The demonic form he takes in his boss fight is his Umbran Climax here, greatly upping his speed and strength.
Tying up some loose ends, one other hidden Verse concerns...Labolas! That's right, a boss battle unique to this mode...unfortunately, Jo hadn't unlocked him yet at the time of recording, and I couldn't select it. Probably would have been in the bad footage anyway.
This mode also means I kinda have to bring up the Witch Trials. They are this game's Angel Slayer, a marathon of sorts, taking you through all of the enemies in the game with the difficulty slowly escalating. Unlike in Bayo 1, here the Witch Trials are split into five Chapters, rather than forcing you to do it in one go. Thing is...every single fight you can take on there can ALSO be found in Tag Climax....and even if you break it up, it's still long. Therefore...I don't want to cover it. You don't get anything for beating it (to my knowledge), and it covers enemies and bosses we've already seen. So there!
If you've read this to the end, thanks! My coverage on Bayo 2 was not without bumps in the road, but I did have fun showing this game off to the best of my ability! Stay tuned for...whatever the hell I decide to record next!
