Bayonetta 2 Chapter 16 A
We're back and....the game's audio is off AGAIN. And on such a large episode too! I've had this issue so many times with Bayo 2...maybe this game is just too intense for my meager computer to handle! At any rate, I apologize. I'm a little tired of redoing parts of this game over and over because of some issue I seem to have little control of...and with the final chapter being as long as it is, I wasn't about to do so again.
With Bayo and Balder back in the present they need to get to the mountain quickly and look who's here to help! Don't bother asking where Jeanne got that jet or how she even knows how to pilot it. And so begins a shoot 'em up section! Can't be a Platinum game without one!
Bayo's bullets act as our long-range option, while Balder's glaive works up close. You'll know when the Glaive can be used when the reticule turns yellow. Overall I like this shooting section, as I find it controls a lot better than most of Platinum's offers...but there can be some issues. You can't shoot and slash at the same time, for one, which can make hitting certain clusters of enemies a pain. I would have loved a "bomb" screen clearing move too, maybe with your Umbran Climax but alas... We've got angels and demons coming at us one after another. In hindsight I would have LOVED to see more combos like this in the main game.
Loptr caught up to Loki and Luka (so man L names!) so we'd better hurry!....well, after we get our last chest AND last Muspelheim gate! This challenge...is not that hard and yet I failed QUITE a bit on it. I edited out like three or four other attempts...Here at least you can see Takemikazuchi's REALLY good at breaking an opponent's guard and makes certain enemies FAR more pleasant to deal with...
But of course we're too late! Loptr even manages to get Balder's Eye, so it's up to Bayo to stop him! Surely this will go well! Except not...Now, if we're just gonna lose this battle in a cutscene afterwards, why even have it go on this long? Stopping it mid-fight would have been preferable to watching us hand Loptr his ass and then he wins anyway. You can tell this game REALLY, REALLY wants to replicate the Balder fight from Bayo 1, complete with Loptr effortlessly killing some of Bayo's demons. Thing is, the novelty of that is gone now and just doing it in a cutscene makes it lose a bit of punch. In Bayo 1 at least, you'd get to take Balder's health down a bit, then do an Infernal Climax as normal, generally getting more and more grandiose with each attempt, only for Balder to counter it but here...Loptr just zaps them and that's that.
And so begins the TRUE final battle. Aesir, God of Chaos....isn't a bad final boss by any stretch...but I wouldn't count it among my favorites from Bayo 1 OR 2. He's like Prophet on steroids, with all manner of projectiles, punches and kicks, an annoying slowdown move and...summoning...bomber planes?
Balder's here to help in phase one, but largely doesn't help TOO much. This first phase can be quite annoying, as Aesir loves to fly around and stay in the air, making it hard to chase him down. You'll notice he's about the ONLY enemy (on 2nd Climax anyway!) that will outright parry and block Wicked Weave and even Umbran Climax attacks.
Phase two has us take to the sky one last time and finish the fight as normal. One rather egregious rehash of the Balder fight is when Aesir chucks a satellite at us only for Bayo to toss it back at him. At least Balder played hot potato with us before it hit him! Here Aesir just stands there and lets it happen...
But now it's time for Loki's trump card: nothing. No really, it's actually nothingness! The power to erase the Eyes of the World...and with it, most of Aesir's power. So begins phase three, our victory lap. In all honesty I should have just let Balder finish the job for us...just to see if Loptr even puts up a fight. To finish off a deity though, you know what that means! Bayo and Balder combine their powers to summon forth Omne, a mysterious being of great power. Looks quite a bit like Jubileus and Sheba merged together, no? As much as I'm meh about this battle overall, drop-kicking someone so hard they knock their body out of their soul is pretty cool! And hey, Jeanne and Gomorrah get their last hit in! Devourer of the Divine indeed.
Loptr's body is gone, but his soul remains free to travel to another time and try again...unless one traps his soul inside their body. And so Balder makes the ultimate sacrifice. Not only does this make that beginning cutscene make sense, it serves to give us our stable time loop and set up Balder as we know him in Bayonetta 1. Now, if this was planned or not from back in Bayo 1's development I don't know...but hey, it all meshes together OK!
The world's in one piece and Loki leaves for parts unknown! Guess that's it! But wait...there's an "A" in this title...so that means there's still a BIT more to go! Credits and such next time....in a MUCH shorter part.
