Hoo boy. I can't really say that I didn't make much progress during this session... but it sure did feel like I was just spinning my wheels for the vast majority of it. Trying to navigate nigh-identical screens over and over again while random encounters keep wasting my time and aggravating me with those bit-crunched voice samples has left my morale in the toilet.
It also really doesn't help that the guide I've been using to assist me doesn't really have any maps to work from. The only maps I could find online were for the Game Gear version of this game... and the layouts appear to be completely different. All I have to work with are text-based directions. The fact that I've got them on my phone and I also have a terrible sense of direction in real life really doesn't help matters much either. Pretty sure I've missed more than my fair share of treasure chests and questions already. But since the good ending requirements are so high, I might just backtrack later on to make sure that I've found everything before wrapping this one up. All the same, this game is beginning to remind me a lot of Discworld. That is not a compliment.
I'm really hoping to finish this game next time, because for as charming as the battle system may be, just about everything else is infuriating. Going into overtime on this one is definitely something I want to avoid... but at this rate, it pretty much seems inevitable. Fortunately, I made it down to the basement area this time before calling it quits. The basement's only got five floors and there are only 12 floors in the main section. Hopefully, that means there isn't that much left.
Also, I now actively want to strangle everyone on HowLongToBeat who said this game takes seven hours to beat and watch the light leave their eyes.
