Media Mod Mic Mod For The GoPro Hero 8 Black - Mic Hack Using A RODE VideoMicro
This video is my first one showing an example of the hack I've done to the GoPro Media Mod shotgun mic for the Hero 8 Black.
What I've done is to basically replace the so called shotgun mic on the Media Mod with a cardioid microphone capsule from the RODE VideoMicro.
To use another mic capsule I've taken the end of the barrel off another microphone, in this instance the Comica CVM-VM10 MK2 and super glued it to the front of the Media Mod. This allows me to connect various ECM capsules inside the added on end barrel which is also ported to allow for the cardioid response from the attached cardioid ECM.
While this porting and the subsequent air movement isn't as good as the body for the RODE VideoMicro, it still does allow the attached ECM capsules to breath and give a fairly decent cardioid response. Something you can clearly hear when I'm testing for the polar pattern and cardioid response by all the traffic on the busy road.
I connect the capsule via a cable that runs through the body of the so called shotgun mic and out through a hole in the back where it is then connected to the 3.5mm mic input on the GoPro's Media Mod. Basically, the GoPro and its Media Mod see the mic hack as an external mic.
I will try some more mic capsules and do some more videos about.
If people are generally interested in the mic hack for the GoPro, I'll do a basic how to guide on how I've done this.
This microphone modification also allows the original microphone on the Media Mod to still work.
