Best Free VST Limiter Plugin - LoudMax - Step by Step Guide for Download Install and Basic Use
In this video I'm doing a step by step guide and tutorial which includes how to download, how to install and how to basically use the free LoudMax VST limiter plugin. LoudMax is also compatible with Mac OSX & Linux and is also available for other plugin architectures including AU, LADSPA & Winamp.
Although the LoudMax VST limiter plugin would appear to be a very simple. It's one of those rare utilities that's simple and easy to use but is far from simple in what it is doing.
While it's main use may be seen as a maximiser for music and stereo mix content, which it is very good at. It is awesome for applying a ceiling limiter to any audio material so you don't peak and clip above 0db. In this particular guide I'm demonstrating how good the plugin is at gain staging and ceiling limiting dialogue within my video editing system, NLE, which is Edius by Grass Valley.
Although this example is being shown within non linear editing software, the LoudMax plugin should work just as well in any other VST compatible NLE or DAW system, Digital Audio Workstation.
Don't be fooled by the simple control nature of this plugin, that's only on the outside. On the inside, LoudMax is doing so much to make the job of applying it very easy.
Although it feels that LoudMax is only doing a simple limiting job, due to its easy to use two control functionality, threshold and output ceiling level. It is taking care of a lot more of the gain staging automatically. Things such as release and makeup or re-gain staging are all done transparently, which makes it super easy to use.
On the point of transparency. LoudMax is very transparent in the signal chain, even when driving it hard it still manages to maintain a clean sound that doesn't sound over cooked or over processed. It also deals with a lot of other signal processing transparently as wel.
It also has to the ability to control your peak transients with its 'Inter-Sample Peak Detection' which will properly protect your maximum dynamic range and output from clipping/distorting.
I have been working professionally in audio post production for almost 30 years and had some of the very first digital audio recording equipment after switching from analogue tape recording. During that time I've had many DAWs and the first first version of Cubase that supported VST and have used many VST signal processors. I can honestly say that LoudMax is not only one of the most impressive VST plgins I've ever used but is simply one of the best audio tools I've used, period.
LoudMax is suitable for seasoned professionals and anyone new to audio production alike. This plugin is easy for anyone to use and is simply an amazing limiter and gain tool that works in many scenarios and applications.
Here's the link to where you can download it. If this becomes a tool in your audio production setup, which I'm positive it will. Please leave a donation for the developers. Without people like this doing all the hard work, people like us would have less options for our post production of all things audio. Even if you can only afford to give a few £s or $s, it will at least be a gesture of your appreciation and it all helps toward the running and living costs of developers.
Remember, creating plugins for developers is a passion and a job, just as your audio productions are to you.

Also, for anyone interested in the video editing software that I use, it's called Edius and is made by a company called Grass Valley. I've used all the major NLEs over the past 25 years and Edius is simply the best. Here is a link to the software and where you can download a free trial.
