How to build a microphone - BM-800 omni-directional ECM modification
In this video I'm showing how to build a microphone.
This particular microphone is a modified BM-800 condenser microphone. The BM-800 is mic that's designed to look like a traditional large diaphragm studio cardioid condenser microphone. While the BM-800 isn't actually what it's built to look like, it does however have a nice body that is really good as a donor body for a self build mic.
The end result of this DIY self build is a microphone that has a body that looks like a typical professional large diaphragm studio cardioid condenser microphone. But this one is actually an omni-directional microphone that uses a 10mm ECM microphone capsule.
So, what I've done is to basically remove all the electronics from the BM-800 mic and remove it's microphone capsule. In essence, scooping out all of its insides and returning it to a shell. I then wire an ECM capsule inside the BM-800 body, the capsule is a Primo EM272, I used to to use the Primo EM172 but they seem to be no longer available. This ECM capsule is wired in such a way that it needs to be used with an XLR cable that terminates to a 3.5mm TRS jack and not another XLR. This cable will then allow the microphone to be plugged into any video or audio recording device that is capable of supplying plugin power, also known as electret power, that has a 3.5mm TRS microphone input.
The idea was to show people how to build a microphone that didn't require phantom power or a dedicated pre-amp. That looked like a traditional large microphone used for YouTube videos, YouTube vlogging and YouTube podcasting. Basically a mic that would cover most of what you'd need a mic to do for YouTube videos, in other words, a YouTube microphone, maybe the best YouTube microphone. While also being useful for other tasks outside of vlogging and podcasting on YouTube.
The other main point of this mic is that it is omni-directional. To better describe the reason for making an omni-directional vlogging mic, here's the description from the video I made demonstrating this microphone.
I chose to make an omni-directional studio microphone as I've never found an omni only mic in what would typically be identify as a studio mic. I've seen pencil condensers that are omni and indeed own a few and I've also owned many typical large diaphragm studio condensers that have an omni-directional polar pattern as part of a selection of pick up patterns but never seen am omni-directional only large diaphragm typical studio mic.
Now, while the end result here is not a large diaphragm mic because I'm only using a 10mm omni-directional ECM microphone capsule, that being a Primo EM272. The point of this mic build and modification was to make a simple omni-directional YouTube vlogging podcast mic that has the same appearance as a typical large diaphragm studio condenser mic.
What do you think of the sound of this microphone? I actually like it because it isn't as subject to a lot of the problems associated with a cardioid microphone, such as close proximity and plosive distortion and wind distortion. I think an omni-directional YouTube mic, or omni-directional vlogging podcast mic is a really good idea for close mic'ing and for certain recording scenarios.
