Blades of Steel - NES - New York vs Edmonton - (1987) - Nintendo - Retro Nostalgia
Today we have a full game between New York and Edmonton in Blades of Steel for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Released in 1987.
This was probably the first sports game I ever played. I can remember playing against my brother and the computer quite a bit back in the day.
Because it's an NES game its pretty simple to pick up and play. I remember being blown away by the view change when you get into a fight as well as the penalty shot mode.
I tried games in the harder leagues first but I got destroyed so that's why I'm playing in the junior league lol. The only thing this affects to my knowledge is difficulty, the teams were still the same.
I think the sound effects, voice samples and graphics are pretty rad. In case you were wondering you just bump into the guy with the puck a few times when on defense and it will usually go into fight mode.
I really only have one complaint and that is the goalie controls. When the opposing team gets near your goal you simultaneously control the goalie and your players. Its very confusing and I usually just end up prioritizing my goalie movements. Also it's got a healthy amount of NES sprite flicker, but that's to be expected with this console when so many sprites are on screen.
If you are looking for a fun hockey game for the NES, you can't go wrong with this.
Blades of Steel doesn't have an options menu so everything is default settings wise.
Do you have any memories of this game? Please share in the comments below, I love reading that stuff!
