Here's something you hear about a lot when it comes to rules of all sorts - the spirit versus the letter. A literal interpretation vs. trying to determine what was intended. In that sort of vein, I wanted to discuss some aspects of understanding how games are INTENDED, maybe.

I often wonder, especially with a new game, how I'm supposed to be playing. Not only in the context of what the best actions would be to take, but also the broader sense of attitude within the game itself. Games aren't meant to be personal, but at the same time we hope that people are playing "correctly". In my eyes, this means that you, as the player, are doing what's best for you to win. Sure you may help others on and off, but generally it's expected that you're serving yourself. What happens when someone isn't doing THAT?

Well, let's discuss! I have some fun stories from my own experiences of people not necessarily playing how a game is intended, as well as talking about some of the particular aspects I personally find to be important. As always, though, let me know what YOU think. What're your thoughts on the spirit of the game, and why? Let me know in the comments!
