2There was a moment in the history of first-person shooters when the future was undefined and limitless. There was no COD, no CS:GO, no Dota or Team Fortress. There was really only Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena. The year was 1999, and I was playing both of them.
Q3A represents in many ways a road which the future chose not to travel, a road to highly kinetic deathmatch-centric twitchy powerup-focused gameplay. True, other FPS games might require more skill or have more features, there are no helicopters or jets or even Capture the Flag originally in Q3A. Just pure colorful gibs-exploding deathmatch gameplay with great voiceover.
If you've never played, and I guess there is a new generation of gamers these days that haven't, it is available on Steam and there was also a free online version called Quake Online last time I checked. Find out how much fun a paleo-FPS can be. Rock it like your cave-man ancestors did 18 years ago, people like me. ;)
