This is episode 148 of my KSP series Journey Into Space. We are embarking on a tour of the outer solar system: Duna, Dres, two of the moons of Jool (Pol and Bop) and Eeloo. Before we do that, we have to prove that our spaceship is up to the challenge of aerobraking at Jool. Here's a spoiler - it's not. So we have to build one that is.

Our spaceship will use ion propulsion and carry a nuclear fission reactor onboard to power it. In our world, ion propulsion is best suited to unmanned probes that can afford to take a slow, efficient way to space rather than a speedy, inefficient way. Manned ion spacecraft are not totally out of the question someday but depend on improvements in ion/plasma engines and especially in power generation that haven't been made yet. In KSP though, a trek to 3 planets and 2 moons is going to be a lot easier if we don't have to worry too much about fuel, and even a thermal fission engine doesn't have the fuel efficiency we'd really want.

And Kerbals apparently don't worry about spending years in cramped spacecraft exposed to a working nuclear reactor, so that is fortunate.
