Bowser has stolen all my Super Mario Nintendo Switch games and it is my quest to save them from his fury.
Will I find a way to get back the key to my newly 3D printed Nintendo Switch game storage chest? Let’s find out together and also have a look on the new game “Super Mario 3D World + Bowser‘s Fury“, which has been released for the Nintendo Switch some time ago. Nintendo sent us a free copy for testing it out. Please mind my honest game review and more details about the crafting and painting process below. Also, special shoutouts to my cat Attila for his guest appearance. Great acting! :-)

Disclaimer: The following section covers the making-of process in more depth. Watch the video first in order to not get spoiled about the video’s story.

The treasure chest, Goomba and Bowser were printed on a resin 3D printer (from Anycubic). All STL files are from thingiverse.com and were slightly adjusted, e.g. rotating Bowser’s hand.

Goomba: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:18526
Bowser: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2767898

Mario himself and Yoshi were not 3D printed, but are just figures/Amiibos I already own.

For painting the models I used acrylic paints from Vallejo. In order to get nice details and highlights I applied the techniques “Glacing“ and “Layering“.
In case of the treasure chest I additionally worked with washes from The Army Painter for getting a shading effect and also dry brushed the highlights.
The castle was made out of Styrodur plates, which we cut and glued on top of each other. As you can see in the video, the castle‘s stone structure was made with a regular pencil and some aluminium foil. After the castle was refined with a X-Acto knife, I painted it with a mix out of ModPodge and black and white acrylic paints. For the final touch I glued some modeling moss onto the stones with regular wood glue.

My honest opinion about the game:

The story of Super Mario 3D World is almost as always, except that Bowser hasn‘t kidnapped Princess Peach but little fairy princesses. There are several worlds and levels, in which you have to collect items and defeat enemies.
The game is a port from the Wii U version with minor differences. Although I completed the game on the Wii U back then, I enjoy revisiting the game on the Nintendo Switch. The coop mode works perfectly fine and makes a lot of fun. You can even choose between playable characters, which all having certain strengths and weaknesses. My favorites are Princess Peach, who is able to float in the air, and Luigi because of his ability of jumping high.
The different collectable items (stars and stamps) have awakened my desire to find them all, although these items could be hidden a little bit better in my opinion.
I really enjoy the game soundtrack, especially in all Bowser levels.

“Bowser’s Fury“ was additionally added to the Switch version of “Super Mario 3D World“. The perspective is slightly different than in the main part, since you can freely move the camera and walk around the open-world levels.
The goal of this game mode is to collect items, clean several islands and – of course – defeat the furious Bowser. I really enjoy that the world is cat-themed and even all enemies and plants have a feline form.
However, the coop mode could be better, since the second player (Bowser Jr.) is not able to do many things and is only here to support the main player (Mario). Bowser Jr. Cannot jump or go around, since he flies in his Koopa Clown Car. This is not as cool as expected, since controlling him is challenging and he only follows Mario without doing anything most of the time. Therefore, I recommend playing this game mode in single player mode.
The idea of chasing away Bowser with strong lights is pretty neat and the Giga-Cat Mario power-up is funny. In my opinion the evil design of furious Bowser is great and the epic soundtracks fits perfectly.

Conclusion:

Super Mario 3D World is definitely a Mario game, which should not be missed in a Mario game collection. Especially the main game mode is totally worth it. Bowser‘s Fury is a well-made and enjoyable additional mode, but it is not as long and comprehensive as I have wished. If you have already played the game on the Nintendo Wii U, you don‘t need to buy this game only for Bowser‘s Fury. If you have never played „Super Mario 3D World“, you should consider buying this game for the Switch.
