Configuring bspwm is actually incredibly simple, far simpler than working with any other window manager like i3 or awesome because of one simple fact. You don't have to learn any special syntax, all you need to be able to do is execute bspc the program that's basically used as a programming interface for bspwm and once you can do that you can rice bspwm to your hearts content. If you want to configure it with bash or zsh go right ahead, I wouldn't recommend it but you could also use python if you feel like it.
