With the Canadian and Polish forces taking Hill 262, the remaining Germans begin their retreat towards the town of Chambois in order to break out of the Falaise Pocket. On 20 August 1944, Pvt. Nichols, Sgt. Dixon, Pfc. Guzzo, Pvt. Huxley and the 90th Infantry Division must defend the town from a large German counterattack until Allied air support arrives.
The Battle of Chambois was the scene of some of the bitterest fighting during the Normandy campaign. For two days, the Americans defended the town against continuous assaults launched by overwhelming enemy forces (mostly remnants of the German 7th Army), taking thousands of prisoners. The battle ultimately was ended as Allied air support finally destroyed what was left of the German forces. The battle resulted in the destruction of most of Army Group B west of the Seine, which opened the way to Paris and the Franco-German border for the Allied armies on the Western Front.
