I had noticed a large Freedom squad ascending the road north of the Checkpoint. Soon they would reach the top of the hill at the crossroads, and I feared they would attack the Ecologists that I assumed were still there. I departed from the Mobile Lab and made my way across the bridge and looked eastward to see their progress. Coming down the road towards me were two Loners I had never seen before. I looked past them and did not see Freedom at the top where I had expected them to be.

I met the Loners and the squad leader was named Sava Dead Duck. I felt like if I didn't take them quickly back to the Mobile Lab they would both be dead ducks. I hired them as Companions and then set them to hold their fire, so if Freedom started shooting us from the top of the hill, they would not turn around and charge them. I got them to the bridge and should have kept going. Instead I hesitated and turned around, puzzled why I didn't see Freedom at the crossroads in front of the Checkpoint. This was a huge mistake.

Suddenly we came under fire from the north in the low hills, were unknown to me, Freedom had left the road before getting to the crossroads and had descended the bluff and had been traveling, probably very fast to ambush the two Loners that they probably spotted before I did. The firefight probably lasted less than a minute, but it was intense. Dead Duck's partner was immediately killed. I danced around trying to sight and shoot the Freedom squad that was spread out. I was barely able to get my new Companion to join the fight and there were two left I quickly killed. There were five Freedom dead and its amazing that Dead Duck and I had survived this ambush. I think the Freedom soldier that got closest, running ahead of the others, had given away the element of surprise with his shot before the others could get into position. I looted the six dead and we were soon back at the Mobile Lab.
