Call Of The Zone - #239: A Point of No Return
I've recently noticed, maybe due to having so many Companions, that sometimes when I reload my Game usually due to a new day of playing, that Companions will be on the roof and not safely below. While they are safe from mutants and most likely any passing enemies, if I'm away, a Psi Storm or Emission could kill them. For that reason, I have to make sure I can get them back down below before I leave the Mobile Lab and go out into Jupiter.
I checked my PDA and the Bandit that had stolen Tukarev's Basic Tools, that had originally been in Jupiter and had moved to Zaton when I wasn't quick enough, was now in Yantar. I was watching him go from level to level and I was hoping he would eventually return to Jupiter. The sun was going down and it was getting dark enough it was hard to see. My target acquisition detected a lone Military soldier on the north side of the road going up to the crossroads. I left the Mobile Lab to investigate.
I found a Clear Sky squad at the Checkpoint and the Military soldier across the crossroads, slightly down the hill just looking around. As they were enemies, there was the potential for a firefight with the three Clear Sky, but it didn't happen. I assume this was one of the two Military I had seen at the Mobile Lab but no idea where the other was or if he was still alive as I was with the squad leader. If he had just been a green dot instead of a star on my Mini-Map, I would have known the other was still alive.
The Clear Sky squad leader offered me a Spring artifact if I could get him a Groza-4. I accepted since I had another job to find a Spring for another NPC. I thought I had a Groza-4 back at the Mobile Lab so I quickly left to retrieve it. I was wrong, I did not have one in my stash, and I checked the inventories of all my Companions, and none had one. I returned to the Checkpoint and on the way up the hill I noticed a neutral yellow NPC coming down another road to the south. I did not identify the Faction but assumed it was one of the many Ecologists I had seen walking around. I arrived at the Checkpoint and took them in as Companions to see if one of them had a Groza-4. They did not. Needing that Spring, I decided to get them to follow me back to the Mobile Lab so I could park them safely inside until I found one.
The Clear Sky Companions started to follow me on the far side of the building, then took off over the hill towards the Ventilation Complex to kill some small mutants. By the time I realized they weren't following and joined them, the mutants were dead, and they were ready to follow. We went down the hill on the south side of the Parking Lot and were soon going up on the other side towards the Bridge. I detected the yellow star NPC on my Mini-Map and decided to approach him since I knew Ecologists were allies with Clear Sky. I would come to regret this poor decision. The NPC was not an Ecologist.
A firefight ensued and I had my Clear Sky set to passive. I had to change them to aggressive so they would not all be slaughtered. The brief firefight was with a Dutyer I had failed to identify until it was too late. Totally my fault and I could have avoided the contact. The Dutyer was killed, and I lost on of the Clear Sky squad. I felt bad for my error that cost two lives. I took the two survivors back to the Mobile Lab and sold them my surplus weapons but there was not a Groza-4 anywhere to be given to them. Yet.
