Castlevania Circle of the Moon - Fighter Mode Ending with 100% Map Completion
This footage was gathered by playing the official Gameboy advance cartridge on the Gameboy player through the game cube console. Since the original quality of the included software is not optimal in terms of quality, I decided to employ a homebrew method, using the Game Boy Interface and Swiss. The result is a great picture for both playing and recording. For any who are interested, the details on this implementation were gathered from the “RGB208 : Getting the Best Picture from your Game Boy, GBC, and GBA Games” from the My Life in Gaming channel. In the future, I plan to up the quality of such recordings by purchasing a framemeister upscaler to add to my capturing environment. The Gameboy player will allow me gather footage from Gameboy advance titles for the moment.
Once you beat the game on magician mode, you get access to the fighter mode by starting a new game and entering “Gradius” as your name. I have to say that fighter mode is my second most favorite and completing the game becomes a breeze with the huge strength, defense, and hit point increases. I was able to casually breeze through the game in around four hours of gameplay. The fighter does not have access to DSS Cards or magic but your really don’t need it with his raw strength. The battle arena became a cakewalk with a boomerang sub weapon in tow. Since farming for the best equipment would be overkill, I decided to just settle with the shining armor for the final battle instead for the normal dark armor.
The video begins with 99.5% of the map completed and I get the extra half a percent by going through the sealed door to the final area. I showcase both card and equipment collections upon loading the save file. From here, I proceed to a nearby warp room and then warp four times to get to the map position that is closest to the final area. Once in the final area you can obtain a hidden hit point increase by breaking the floor at the bottom of the room. I obtain the hit point increase and then proceed up the room to arrive at Dracula’s first form.
The first battle was easy with the boomerang, even though I did a sub-par job dodging his projectiles. It didn’t matter though because the fighter is over powered and he fell after just a couple rounds. After the battle, Hugh will enter the room to remove your restrained master and deliver some post battle dialogue. Once they leave the screen, I bring up my inventory and map screen to show the completed map before following Dracula into the light beam.
This brings us to the second, larger form of Dracula, which is located in a weird dimension. As in the last battle, I choose to spam the boomerangs in this battle as well. I choose to use the side platforms to my advantage during the first portion of this fight. Dracula will normally appear next to your character and attack and then vanish afterwards. If you stay at the bottom of the screen, you can lure Dracula to appear down there and then jump to an upper platform to avoid both his laser and poison cloud attacks. You just have to wait until Dracula opens the eyeball on his chest, toss a couple boomerangs, and then retreat to the platform above to avoid his attacks. Once enough damage has been dealt, he will switch his attack pattern again. Wait at the bottom of the screen and position yourself between the two upper platforms in order to avoid landing on them. He will appear to the side flashing. Wait until he is about to dash toward you and execute a single roc feather jump to the top of the screen. This will allow him to pass under you and allow you to return to the bottom of the screen. Repeat this until he does not immediately reappear. This will signify that he has transformed into a vulnerable, floating eyeball form with regenerating bats that encircle it, occasionally flying off toward your location. As he gets into range, jump toward him and launch boomerangs towards the eyeball. Keep on him until he starts to fade away and then return to the middle of the area, between the platforms. This will position you for another dodging phase. From this point, he will alternate the two phases until the end of the battle.
Once Dracula falls, I let the ending play through and get the shooter mode unlocked.
