This game was released in 1990, and I had this game. It didn't require any sound card to play it, because Access Software found a way to make realistic sounds and voices with standard PC speakers. This was unheard of, because games that used PC speakers had horrible sounds. May other titles were released by this company, like Mean Streets, and Martian Memorandum which sounded great with standard PC sound!

Crimewave was similar in design format to Narc which was released in 1988 by Williams in the arcades. That game was released in 1988, because the president Reagan declared war on drugs at the time. In the introduction, it clearly said don't do drugs. That was the historical context of the game; however, the story lines are completely different in the two games.

In Narc, you are a DEA agent trying to stop the evil drug dealers, and you have a rocket launcher, and a short M-16 assault rifle. In Crimewave, you were hired by the president of the United States to rescue her daughter from an evil drug kingpin. You have a assault rifle, and a rocket launcher. You can't make any arrest like you in Narc, your job is to kill em all and rescue the beautiful maiden. The first level to the 2nd to the last level are the streets, drug warehouses, counterfeiting factories, drug factories, and black market arms warehouses. The last level is a mansion where the kingpin lives, you kill the kingpin, you rescue the presidents daughter, and you fall in love with her.

As the levels progress, you run into different times of enemies, and you enter different environments. In the beginning, you run into the average drug pusher and progress to a big fat man with a rocket launcher. You can shoot him 100 times, and he will never go down. The only way to kill him is with a rocket. Then, you have the ninjas who jumps around and throws ninja stars, and the crouching man with the grenade launcher.

The graphics for the game required to have VGA 256 colors to get the best experience. I had VGA on my old 386 SX-16 mhzs at the time, and it was really a fun game to play. It was a very action packed game, but the graphics were a bit grainy. It wasn't as good as Narc. In those days, the arcade games were always superior to the home computer or home console systems. The game ran quite smoothly at the time, it didn't lag, it didn't slow down, and it provided me with hours of fun.

The company that made this game no longer exists, they were making games until 2006 when they became defunct. They made many great titles, like Mean Streets, Microsoft Golf, Links, Countdown, Amazon Guardians of Eden, Beach head, Martian Memorandum, etc. They were best known for their interactive games, like Martian Memorandum. It is a pity that this company went bankrupt about 8 years ago. The people who worked for Access Software founded a new company, and it is called Big Finish Games. Check out their website.
