(CCPlays) Cold Waters (Dot Mod): High Noon Redux 2000 -- 688(I) vs PLAN wolfpack
The year is 2000. In this Cold Waters scenario, "High Noon", A 688(I) is tasked to stop a wolfpack of Chinese submarines from attacking US bases on Guam.
This is a replay, as our previous outing somehow had a submarine escape from me.
------
I immediately went quiet and looked started identifying all contacts, and soon found the submarine wolfpack which included Han, Ming, Song, and even an Improved Kilo, for a total of 6. There are also 3 merchants transiting the area, blissfully unaware of the battle below them.
There is ONE thing you need to plan for... the way the torpedo transits to the activation point, and whether there are any obstacles in between.
Generally, the torpedo will transit at the depth it was launched. So if you want your torpedo to say near the surface, then dive down to the enemy? Launch your torpedoes near the surface. The depth control program you can set is only for AFTER activation, and it usually has 4 settings: same depth (same as now), go shallow (up arrow), go deep (down arrow), surface lockout (down arrow and submarine, i.e. target subs only, not surface ships). The setting has NO effect when the torpedo is just heading toward its activation point.
I figured this out the hard way after wasting half a dozen torpedos into the seafloor as I usually launch deep (300m) and there's this "ridge" on this map that you are fighting around, that can block torpedoes transiting over to the other side. The lone activated torpedo (by accident) did not crash because it was following its depth setting and went shallow, thus avoided crashing into the ridge.
Anyway, I targeted 4 of the subs with my 4 torpedoes, by launching them east, then dogleg them NNE into the group. I did not cut wires as I want to be absolutely sure I don't hit a merchant. And the dogleg did help. There may have been a few snapshot torpedoes but they did not even come close. After a bit of guidance for all four torpedoes, 4 Chinese subs are sent to the bottom.
I then fired 3 more torpedoes, accidentally slammed one into the underwater ridge, then activated both so they go shallow THEN dive down to the target when they get closer. The two Ming class subs went down quickly, though one did counterfire a torpedo which didn't come close to tracking me.
When that torp ran out of juice, all PLAN subs are on the seafloor, and it is time to disengage and put a broom on the conning tower. (Clean sweep)
