(CCPlays) Cold Waters (Dot Mod): Opening Shots 1984 -- 688 vs Surface Action Fleet and Escorts
The year is 1984, and we are in the time of "Red Storm Rising" by Tom Clancy (and Larry Bond). In this simple Cold Waters scenario, "Opening Shots", a 688 has been tasked with intercepting a Soviet fleet that sortied from Archangelsk naval base. The Soviet target: a NATO supply convoy bringing reinforcements to Europe.

As the sonar situation settled, we find ourselves looking at a plethora of surface contacts... and one possible subsurface contact.
The layer is shallow and ducting is medium at best. I deployed the towed array and tried various positions and orientations to best identify all the contacts. We picked out an Udaloy, a Kara, a Kresta, and a Sovremenny. We also picked up a transport "Partizan", something that sounds suspiciously like a Foxtrot sub, but is usually a Trawler... and... intermittent contact of an Alfa sub to the southeast, could be a part of the fleet.
As the fleet entered the 20 km circle, I started the attack, by sending off a decoy to SSW, then 3 torpedoes. I will dogleg them into the fleet to the south a little later.
The attack did not go as expected, as Sovremenny disappeared to the south, the Alfa also disappeared, (probably sprinted east). Kresta was the first to eat a torpedo, leaving Kara and Udaloy. The two did their best, firing 5 torpedoes in various directions, but only one came within a few clicks of me, and I was doing ultra-quiet at near test depth, so the torpedo never picked me up. The two remaining torps never got close to anyone.
With both Kara and Udaloy circling, I chose to engage them, with another salvo of 2 torpedoes, plus one torpedo toward where the Alfa was last detected, hoping I can spook it into revealing itself. Both torpedoes eventually found their marks, sinking Kara and Udaloy. When the torpedo got to where Alfa was, there was nothing there. Going up above the layer showed that Alfa had sprinted further to the east, by another 15 km, no way I can ever catch him.
Then I noticed the Sovremenny has turned around and heading back north, looking for its comrades.
At 20 km range, I fired one torpedo at a dogleg course toward the Sovremenny. And soon, I guided the torpedo around the decoys. Finally, the Sovremenny went down.
As the Alfa had disappeared completely to the east, and the primary objective is complete, I disengaged.
