(CCPlays) Cold Waters (Dot Mod): The Setting Sun 1984 -- 688 vs CL Svedlov and Surface Escorts
The year is 1984, and we are in the time of "Red Storm Rising" by Tom Clancy (and Larry Bond). In this simple Cold Waters scenario, "The Setting Sun", a 688 has been tasked with intercepting a new fleet that just storied from the Murmansk naval base, to intercept the latest NATO reinforcement convoy for Europe. This battlegroup is based on the old gun cruiser Svedlov, built in the 1950s.

This one turned out to be nowhere as hard as I thought it would be.
As the sonar settled, there were no less than 8 contacts to my right. Two of them sounded a lot like submarines, but in my experience, those are often just trawlers. They are also not in any sort of formation. A third is just transport. That leaves 5 contacts: Svedlov, Krivak, Udaloy, Kara, and Sovremenny.
I was below a medium duct and layer, so I don't know what their base course is quite yet, and they are a little faster than I am, so range is quite far, as far as 32 km. from middle of their formation, but the distance could be distorted by the lensing effect caused by the thermal layer.
It took a while, but finally we got a base course. Udaloy, Kara, and Krivak are just running circles about Svedlov, and base course is roughly northward. There are some ASW helos dropping sonobuoys ahead of the formation.
My thoughts are simply to launch a decoy to east, then 3 torpedoes into the middle of the formation to northeast, and see what happens. I got them launched, then went deep and reloaded all tubes to torpedoes, and waited.
Strangely, the Krivak has turned around and is heading SW, followed by the Svedlov! Kara is still heading NE, and the other two ships are way off to NE. The three torpedoes I launched are no longer factors, but it's likely Krivak had detected them and is looking for me. Why Svedlov followed, on the other hand, I have no idea.
By this time, I loaded all 4 tubes with torpedoes, and when I judged the Krivak and the Svedlov are within 10km or so, I fired two torpedos at each, with enough room for a dogleg, but also launched under the thermal layer.
It was overkill, as only 2 torpedoes were needed to kill both ships. The other two I turned north, but they didn't hit anything before their power ran out.
That leaves the Udaloy, Sovremenny, both of which are charging southwest at flank speed, and Kara, which is heading NE at 20 kts.
I waited until the two are 10 km away, then sent one torp after each ship. Took a bit of maneuvering around multiple decoys, but in the end both went down. That leaves one ship: Kara, but it was running away... Until it also turned back to the southwest at 20 kts, after hearing the demise of their squadron mates. But Kara by this time is well over 40 km away, so even if it is charging back at 20 kts it will take a while for our range to close, as I am keeping my stealth profile at 5 kts ultraquiet.
I launched a torpedo at the Kara under the layer when it is 20 km away. Then popped the torpedo up when it is 4 km away. Kara had already turned away, so the torpedo got into a stern chase. Kara managed to pop decoy several times and avoided the torp, but eventaully, with a little bit of manual guidance, the torpedo hit and Kara went to the bottom like the others. Clean sweep complete.
