(CCPlays) Cold Waters (Dot Mod): 688(I) vs... Russian and Chinese Navy (Custom Mission, 2000)
One of the fun things with dotMod is you can play surface ships now, and I decided to use the mission editor to test just this!
Last time, we tried the Seawolf against most of Russian and Chinese navy. Seawolf took a hit due to bad luck, but was able to clean-sweep the enemies, both surface and sub.
What if... We pit a 688(I) against the same setup? Between 6-10 surface ships, and between 3-4 submarines? To make it SLIGHTLY fair, we're not using the latest Russian subs (no Alfa, Victor, Sierra, Akula, or Severodvinks). How will the 688(I) fare?
------
Decided to go deep immediately, and we quickly identified all of the surface contacts, but no sub. They are all to NE, except for one in NW, but that's a merchant. I deployed the towed array, and identified two more contacts to north, one of which is a sub. That is two fewer than I would have liked.
If the range to Romeo is to be believed, it is way too close. And so is everything else, and the plan is set. Kill Romeo first, and send two more torpedoes to Northeast, and try to aim for the big ships, but any one will do, definitely with doglegs.
Popped decoy to north, then 3 torpedoes, which is when I realized my mistake. The decoy's course took it too close to the Romeo, which means my own torpedo is confused by my decoy! It took 10 minutes of circling to finally kill that darn Romeo.
The moment Romeo went all flank, the surface ships went crazy. Kiev just went all flank to the east, leaving everything else behind. Killed Sovremenny, Jiangwei. Reloaded and fired 2 more torpedoes, and killed a Luda charging in from the North. The torpedo won't catch he Kiev, so sent it north to hit the Luhu. Did have to steer the torpedo a couple times from the merchant.
Fired two more torpedoes east, looking for Jianghu3 and Jianghu, and eventually got both.
Tried chasing down the Kiev using TSAMs, but TSAMs are too slow to saturate the defenses.
Decided to end the scenario. Kiev got away, and 2 subs simply left the area. But it proves that 688 is NOT that less lethal than Seawolf class.
