(CCPlays) Cold Waters (Dot Mod): The Bastion Gambit 1984 -- 688 vs SSBN plus Surface and Sub Escorts
The year is 1984, and we are in the time of "Red Storm Rising" by Tom Clancy (and Larry Bond). In this simple Cold Waters scenario, "The Bastion Gambit", a 688 has been tasked with penetrating both the surface and subsurface escorts of a Soviet boomer (ballistic missile sub) and kill it... while being hunted by the escorts AND the the subs AND maritime patrol aircrafts AND helos from the escorts...
My standard loadout when entering dangerous situations is always 3 torps and 1 decoy.
Upon detecting sierras, we quickly identified a Kresta close by and an Udaloy to the north, plus a merchant somehow transiting through the area. The sea floor is extremely uneven, some areas going down to 500m, some areas as shallow as 100m. There is a shallow but strong layer, so I decided to engage these escorts first and was successful in doing so. Kresta went down first. Water conditions helped distract the Udaloy into shooting at bogus contacts. However, one salvo did land very close, but I was much deeper than he expected. Then he ate a torpedo.
Detected a contact to northeast, then north. Identified multiple submarines to north as I creeped north, which I tentatively identified as 3 Kilos, but later turned out to be 2 Tangos and 1 Kilo. I managed to sink all three with very careful ambushes, and avoided all counterfire, as there is enough water to go deep for the first. The later subs were far more problematic, but got the kills.
However, I never found the boomer, after trolling through the shallow 100m waters for hours. I circled the area several times, but never got a hint on where the boomer went, even with towed array deployed. Have a feeling it escaped west with the freighter, but it was only a feeling.
------
While I did wipe out all the escorts and won a tactical victory, the mission was a strategic defeat.
In fact, the many times I've tried this, the only way I detected the boomer was I spooked it into cavitating when a torpedo headed in its directly but technically not aimed at it. That was basically luck.
