(CCPlays) Cold Waters (Dot Mod): Duel 1984 -- 688 SSN vs Charlie SSKN
The year is 1984, and we are in the time of "Red Storm Rising" by Tom Clancy (and Larry Bond). In this simple Cold Waters scenario, "the Duel" (under single mission), we have a 688-class SSN going up against an equivalent sub from the other side, in this case, a Charlie-class sub. How will I fare?
With only 4 tubes on the 688, my usual MO is to load 3 torpedoes and 1 MOSS decoy, which I do so before the scenario starts.
When the scenario starts, I immediately order ultra-quiet, as I was near periscope depth (30 m) and can hide in the surface noise. Sonar immediately picked up multiple contacts, sierra 1 through 4. I went to ID them and found S1 is a submersible, probably Charlie-class, while S2 through S4 are transports or merchants. They are to be ignored. I ID them as Andiezhan class transport but turned out they are Trawlers, with extremely similar acoustic signatures.
The first priority, after identifying S1, is to determine its course. The bearing to us is SSW, but I don't want to turn broadside to it. So I turned left to 135 (SE) hoping to open the range slightly. I also deployed the towed array (DotMod) while checking the conditions of local water. There is a weak layer and ducting at 86 m. I decided to go below slowly to roughly 100m to check below the layer.
Charlie will cruise at 12 kts, but will sprint at 26 kts if it heard something suspicious. It is doing 12 right now, as it is headed east, and will cross my bow.
The initial estimate found S1 extremely close (under 8 km), then it turned away, so his tail was toward me. A submarine has a major weakness... It cannot detect enemies coming up directly behind, known as "the baffles". To take advantage of this, I started firing. I accidentally fired tube 4 (the decoy) on a course of 180, along with two torpedoes, tubes 1 and 3 that I did mean to fire. The plan is to have the torpedoes go directly south, then turn toward the enemy sub. This is known as a "dog leg", and disguises the origin of the torpedo. A frequent counter-tactic when you sense a torpedo coming at you is to fire one down the reciprocal heading, which often forces the enemy to dodge, hopefully breaking his own wires. If you do a dog leg with your own torpedos, enemy return fire will be aimed away from you.
As the two torpedoes have their waypoint changed for the dogleg, Charlie turned away and went to flank speed. He must have heard the torpedoes. Silly sub... You can't outrun a Mk 48 with just 26 knots. With a little nudge on the controls, two torpedoes went after Charlie, with a slight spread between them. , and torpedo one locked on as it got close enough.
Charlie started a left turn and started dumping decoys. I manually guided the torpedo around each decoy. Torpedo two is not fooled, from further back. It cut across the circle and is closing fast.
Torpedo one was distracted by a decoy and had to do a full 360 circle to lock back on. Two was also distracted and did a 180 turn but I manually turned it back to the target.
Charlie's luck ran out when torpedo one reacquired and detonated. Two followed just a moment later, ending the duel.
