The year is 1984, and we are in the time of "Red Storm Rising" by Tom Clancy (and Larry Bond). In this simple Cold Waters scenario, "Beating the Odds", a Sturgeon-class sub has been tasked with an extremely difficult task... Destroy one of the strongest ships of the Soviet navy... a Kirov-class battlecruiser... and survive the two escorts plus helo and maritime patrol craft...

As always, when it comes to dangerous situations, my plan is 3 torpedoes and one MOSS decoy.

As we got into the scenario, I'm at 100m, and we quickly identified multiple contacts to SW. We picked up Kresta II, Krivak I, and Kirov... plus a blue whale. Oh, darn, guess that whale won't be having a good time when the Soviets started blasting the water with active sonar.

My range estimate is roughly 16km, but I have no base course yet. It took a while to determine their base course is roughly 150. They are in an inverted V, with Kirov behind and the two escorts up front. The whale is on the far side. I turned to course 180 to get behind them. I did hear some prop aircraft buzzing so they do have maritime anti-sub patrols out.

Water conditions are rather lousy: there is a shallow medium layer at 48m. I'm well below that. However, the range has closed quite a bit. They are now roughly 10km away.

My plan was fire my MOSS decoy to SSE, then fire all three torpedoes at them, hopefully put two into Kirov. Got two torpedoes off. The third one's wire broke upon launch. Crap. I turned SSW to present minimum profile, as the ships reacted to the launch transient. Kirov started to accelerate to the south, as is the Kresta, while Krivak turned north toward me. I turned west to 250, and went to near test depth of 380m (max depth is 404m) when I detected two sonobuoys to the south, nearly bracketing me. Kirov is up to 24 kts, but the torpedoes are catching up, and Krivak seems to be going after my MOSS decoy. I decided to tough it out and turned slightly away from the sonobuoys.

The torpedoes activated, and both were temporarily jammed but were manually guided back onto the Kirov. However, Kirov did use decoys and was able to avoid the torpedoes a few times, but not forever. Torpedo 1 hit, after making a full circle, then torpedo 2 caught up, and that's the end of the Kirov.

Primary objective complete, now the problem is getting away.

I turned to course 300, away from the sonobuoys, but it appears that Krivak is ignoring my decoy and is coming after me. However, I am not certain of that. I did reload 2 of the tubes with torpedoes, so I kept the two spent tubes unloaded and stayed on ultra-quiet, but prepared to fight.

The Krivak steadily closed in, when I heard another explosion. It appears that the 3rd torpedo, the one that had a broken wire from the start, managed to find its way to the Kresta and sank it without any input from me.

Now, it all comes down to whether I can survive this Krivak.

When it launched hedgehog and torpedo at 1.2km, I ordered all ahead flank and ordered snapshot two torpedoes down reciprocal heading, only to have a tube jam as I had accelerated too quickly. Crap. I slowed down just enough get 2 snapshot torpedoes at him, then a moss decoy going ENE, then went back to flank.

Unfortunately, his torpedo found me as it charged right past the moss decoy and my acoustic decoy. And I took a hit. But the Krivak is now busy dodging my torpedoes with no wires.

It then tried to hedgehog and torpedo the moss decoy. I launched my first reloaded torpedo at him at range of 1 km. My torpedo hit the Krivak before he can launch another attack. His torpedoes are busy chasing the MOSS decoy to the northeast. I tried to go ultraquiet, but realized I am sinking badly, and only 10 kts gave me enough plane authority to keep the boat from sinking. However, with the Bear still patrolling, I can't surface either. And damage control is not making any headway against flooding if I stay at 130m. Attempts at going shallow will cause cavitation that will be picked up by sonobuoys. I'm in a serious Catch-22.

But after both enemy torpedoes went silent, I decided to end the scenario with flooding. It was successful, and I had conducted a clean sweep of the Soviet forces.

------

In hindsight, I should have engaged the Krivak while it was distracted by the MOSS decoy, and used that opportunity to slip away, instead of letting it get close enough to hedgehog me. And I really need to learn torpedo evasion.
