I had to do a backup game today as the core game tested fine... until I tried to stream it. Then it just didn't want anything to do with OBS anymore. Not the first time a game's main menu has done that either, and it's really frustrating. There's no reason for it. Argh.

So, I grabbed a quickie I'd been wanting to look at for a while. Chex Quest HD. A game you can right now grab on Steam for free. The only thing that was in the product were codes to unlock the other characters - and they weren't exclusive either, so one code could be used for everyone... and so THOSE are online as well. The original Chex Quest is a high watermark for advergames. Because it was Doom. But even beyond that, it's actually pretty well done. A cute concept, good graphics, good maps, some tweaking to the weapons and enemies in Dehacked to change their behavior a bit. And it worked. It sold packages, because back then you had to get the package to get the disc to play it. Today? With the game being just free to download, and even the codes not being important, I don't see how that's supposed to sell anything. Now you're relying on the quality of your game... and nobody seems to actually want to invest in making sure their game is anything but shovelware. So it's not making their brands look good. I certainly don't really want to run out and buy any Chex Mix after playing this. Which, to me, means this was a failure for its core purpose.

It's not even that great of a game. With no being able to rebind the controls, no subtitles, and a difficulty that could be best described as "Game Journalist mode". But I wanted to see it. Now I have. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
