Chuck Rock (Amiga) Playthrough / One of those days when some duchebag kidnaps the girl of his life.
Chuck Rock (1991) by Core Design is a platform game following the adventures of Chuck Rock, whose life companion was kidnapped out of jealousy in the most primitive way known to fiction. So much for the plot, in a nutshell. Chuck himself is portrayed as a balding big-jawed, stereotypical primitive, who is impossible not to like :D Apparently, the charisma that emanated from Chuck enabled him to become the mascot of the Core Design company, until he was later replaced by Lara Croft. The game is a rather standard platformer distinguished, mainly by its sense of humor, from the competition. During our adventures we will have to interact with the environment quite often in order to safely complete given levels. Whether it's moving a rock to the right place to jump to an otherwise inaccessible spot, or shielding your head with a rock from the dangers falling on us from above, or even interacting with various dinosaurs, which we need in order to move on. There may not be too many of these elements if you look at the whole game, but you have to admit that they are a nice addition, adding variety to the gameplay. Chuck's only weapon is himself !!! His round belly can destroy any basic threat with one blow, and his legs are actually even more lethal, as during one jump you can actually launch about 2-3 attacks. Graphically the title is quite good, the sprites are quite large and detailed and the levels, despite the static backgrounds, blend well together.
Music, on the other hand, comes off worst here because, as far as I know, all we have throughout the game from the first level is menu music, where Chuck, along with his band, plays a rock song. I don't know if it plays for the whole game, but I know that it certainly does for the first 2 levels...... after that I got so fed up with it that I decided to start the game from the beginning and play only with sound effects. I don't do it too often, but in this case it was worth it. The Amiga unfortunately can't handle effects and music at the same time, so we have to choose one or the other. Sound effects are much better than that one track zipping around, as they add depth to the gameplay and character of the main character. The belly bump has that stereotypical WB cartoon sound where someone or something moving at high speed bounces off a very flexible surface. There are a few more annoying things, like the feeling of the lack of range of Chuck's attacks, which is hard to get used to. Opponents , who fly freely through platforms that we can't get around....... and other little things that I conscientiously want to write about already. In general, as for me, Chuck Rock is a pleasant surprise, but in no way can compare with such sweepers of the genre as Mario or Sonic. It is a good game but outdated in fact already on the day of its release. Which does not mean, of course, that you can't have fun with it. You can definitely play it without any worries
