CiB Game Boy Theater - Race Days and Mortal Kombat 1&2 Dual Cartridge (Episode 77)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
I didn't purposefully try this, but both games this episode are essentially combination cartridges. Race Days has Dirty Racing, which is a RC Pro-Am clone, and Off-Road Adventure, which is awful.
I really appreciate developers trying to push the Game Boy to its limit, but these first person games are really, really hard to play. Off-Road Adventure runs at such a low framerate that it makes me kind of nauseous - yikes.
I never knew that Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 had a combination cartridge --- and here we are. We looked at MK1 (Episode 20) and MK2 (Episode 7) before. MK1 is truly awful, although MK2 is a serviceable game. Much like many other weird, rare, or obscure combination or re-release cartridges, this one only has one menu differentiating it from the separate cartridges. But hey, now we know it exists! Thanks for watching.
