Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - The Action Game by Spidersoft and Published by Lucasfilm Games / US Gold in 1992.

"A few thousand years ago, Atlantis sank the secret of the most destructive force on earth. But the Nazis have rediscovered the lost kingdom, and they'll soon have a bomb that can end World War II in fifteen minutes. Unless Indiana Jones gets in their way..."

The Commodore 64 didn't get the awesome point and click adventure of the same name. Only the lowly action game which is more exploration and looting than any actual action, at least until the final level. The game features 6 'Dazzling 3-D isometric' levels with the first being the longest by far due to the money builder roulette playing required to buy needed items before moving on.

In each level there is usually at most only one enemy on screen at any one time. You just need to knock em down with ya fists or a weapon and steal their chocolate which you can consume for energy. You control both Indy and Sophia and both can pick up items as well as dropping and swapping items as needed. You do get limited pockets but working together its a non issue. The game lacks any kind of passcode system so you can just load a later level and continue. The game must be played in one go which is pretty daunting when you are trying to work things out, but like most games, once you know the solution it is quite easy and short. A neat feature is being able to spin the camera so that you can see building from another angle to sport doors and hidden items.

Control can be annoying. left/right spins the player while forward moves you ...forward. Fire jumps but is only requires at two points in the game. Backwards is 'punch / use weapon' Space is used to switch between items while 'U' key is used to actually use them. what a farce! Collecting the weapons isn't needed but it surly helps to have them as you can lose energy quite quickly in a punch up. Some enemies can be farmed for their chocolate. There are no real hints as to what the levels want you to do and nothing story wise to even tie the levels together.

Overall the game isn't that great on the C64 or in general across platforms. However for a C64, it is reasonably well presented with an intro sequence and nice title music. The single screen outro is a bit disappointing after the effort though. The game is quite slow to update the screen when moving and the sprites are terrible made up of largely undefined pixel blocks. The levels are not very detailed and even the Spectrum version looks sharper. The tape loader is quite slow with each intro picture displayed as fast as they can be loaded one after the other. The levels are all large executables and take forever to load. A loosing image is in between every level and you have to wait for that to be skipped over before the next level loads.

Note: The original game has a broken soundtrack. A fixed version of the sid file has been made available and I have used it over the original in this video.
