đăCrash Canyon by KosakkuăăMega Maker Showcaseă(Play My Mega Man Maker Level)
Welcome, friends, to the CRASH CANYON -- a land of fiery pits, hip-hopping pylons and Miners that are somehow not annoying to fight.
This level has a lot going for it. It's very well constructed from both a visual and mechanical standpoint. Visually I think the appeal speaks for itself -- it's not a level that uses large blocks of the same tile, but rather combines tiles into interesting combinations. It also has a basic inside/outside style progression that makes the level feels like it's progressing between different areas.
That last point is something I ignore a lot, but even the smallest transition between two different areas can make a level feel much bigger than it actually is. I've been trying to work more and more of that into my levels recently and so far I've been happy with the way it feels.
Next is the mechanical end. This level has what I like to call "purposeful challenges". This is a concept that I sometimes notice where you can tell that enemies and traps were placed with a specific objective or challenge in mind, rather than being used to fill space almost at random. It's sometimes tough to notice or appreciate (many times I'll only notice it after when editing a video), but it makes a world of difference when it comes to how fun it is to play your levels.
The classic example of this is a Hot Dog. You can put a Hot Dog on a flat field and make the player shoot him 20 times, but the player is not going to have to do anything that will put them in danger -- they can just shoot the Hot Dog before they get in it's range or, in the worst case most dangerous scenario, hang out in the safe zone of the flame arc.
This is a cardinal sin in Mega Man Maker levels for a reason -- what you're doing here is creating a toll booth that takes payment in the player's time. It's not nearly as fun to mash shoot 20 times and kill a Hot Dog without being in any danger as it is to jump around from platform to platform trying to dodge the fire and barely making it through. At least make it so the player has to jump once in a while -- even Mega Man 2 did that.
That's a roundabout way to say that this level lacks those kinds of "toll booth of time" moments, and everything seems purposeful. That is one of the biggest tenants of good mechanical design in my opinion.
One final notable part about this level is it is thematically congruent. You have Crash Canyon, which is clearly a mining outpost of some sort, inhabited by miners and minecarts. There's even the danger pylons you would expect from a construction zone, as well as some Gyrees that could be seen as saw blades of some sort. This visual theme becomes a mechanical theme, capped off with a boss fight including the pylons you've been seeing throughout the stage.
All in all, this is a great Mega Man Maker level and it's been a pleasure playing. I can't wait to see what else Kosakku (or GuruAnalytic, as he is known on YouTube). has in store, as I believe I have three more levels right now that have been submitted by him.
Thanks for stopping by friends, I hope you enjoyed the video! Th-Th-The, Th-Th-The, Th-Th... That's all, folks!
