CrossCode first playthrough, part 1
1I'm finally starting another long-overdue ARPG playthrough. CrossCode caught my eye years ago, yet I somehow hadn't ever even played so much as the demo before.
CrossCode's vibrant art style made it stand out when I first saw it, and the soundtrack seems excellent as well, with plenty of throwbacks (whether intentional or not) to Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, etc.
I've somehow managed to avoid spoiling any of the plot in the 5 years since the game released, so I was surprised to learn it seemingly revolves around the concept of an MMO - which I find amusing, since I've enjoyed various elements of a few MMORPGs but distinctly do _not_ enjoy the MMO aspect, which could make this perfect for me.
CrossCode certainly puts plenty of action into the action-RPG formula, perhaps even too much - in addition to melee attacks, there's full-blown twin-stick shooter mechanics, which can be hard to wrangle when combined with plenty of moving and dodging. I tend to have a harder time with hardcore twin-sticks on gamepad (which I'm playing this on) than on keyboard and mouse, so I've pretty much committed to relying on melee as much as possible.
There's also a surprising amount of puzzles, both explicitly and also more implicitly in terms of discovering out-of-the-way or obscure paths to certain areas and items.
And if all that weren't interesting enough, there's clearly plenty of plot development and twists waiting to happen. I'm definitely looking forward to playing more of this; hopefully I don't get my butt whooped too often.
