Severed Steel first playthrough part 3: Rogue Steel mode
The next mode we're checking out came out in October 2022 as a free content expansion.
You'd expect a mode named Rogue Steel to be a roguelike, but at its core it's a randomizer mode that puts you through 10 randomly-selected levels, with perks (and sometimes difficulty modifiers) added in between via cards. There is an optional perma-death toggle which makes it function more like a roguelike; without this turned on, you can retry individual levels as many times as you want.
Many of the cards in Rogue Steel will be familiar from the mutator list in Firefight mode, and some of which unlock mutators in that mode when you complete a run with the card active in this mode. After each level, you're prompted to choose 1 of 3 cards, some of which are strictly helpful, while others will increase your score multiplier but also increase difficulty. After every few rounds, a score multiplier card will be randomly chosen, and at a couple of points in the sequence, enemy numbers will increase in each level.
Completing runs and accumulating total score across runs unlocks cosmetics in the form of outfits and cannon reskins. Personally I'm partial to the original outfit colors over any of the others I've unlocked anyway, but some of the cannon variations look neat.
I haven't played any roguelikes in a while, but I feel like Rogue Steel doesn't scratch the itch or rope me in as strong as most roguelikes would. Regardless, it's an interesting idea to mix up the game and give players a new way to play it.
