Deadlock is a turn based strategy game. It was made and published by Accolade and was released in 1996. It was also ported to MacOS a year later.

So I had the Deadlock CD in my hands again and tried to install/play it but it is still not working. Now even less than before since I got the new PC I have an even harder time getting oldgames to work. But because of that I decided to atleast make a slideshow of some ingame screenshots and stuff. Not all are from Deadlock 1 a few of them are from Deadlock 2 because it was hard to find good screenshots for this game. And also both games are pretty much the same so it doesn't really matter ;)

The music you hear can be found on the Deadlock CD and was composed by Paul Kwinn the co-lead programmer/designer of the game and it's bascially an easter egg.

I don't know if any of you played Master of Orion 2 (probably but I didn't :D ) however I've seen it and thought hey Deadlock is actually comparable to it. Both games are pretty much alike but the difference is that MoO2 is just a much bigger game.

In Deadlock you are only clonizing one planet instead of a whole galaxy and have only take care of different territories. Although you can make Gallius IV pretty big with a high amount of territories it surely won't get as complex as MoO2 so it is more suited for players who want a quicker and simpler version.

After starting the game you need to gather resources, expand your territories, manage your colonies, research new technologies, take care of your colonists morale and build a strong military for defense and/or attack purposes. It sometimes feels like a mix between SimCity,The Settlers, Master of Orion and turn based gameplay.

The general goal of the game is to build 10 city centres before anyone else does and it is not as easy done as it sounds because with every city centre you build it will cost you more credits and resources the next time. But that does not mean you can take your time because your enemies will do everything for their domination of the planet.

You can also play it offensive and screw the city centre construction. Instead just annihilate your opponents with all of your military power and the planet will be yours anyway.

However you play the game in the end is completely up to you but you also need to know that every species has different strength and weaknesses so you may take that into account when planning out your "Planetary Conquest" ;)

Multiplayer is also supported with up to 7 players, so that basically means that everyone needs to choose one of the species available because you can not have multiple players with the same species.

The funny thing in Deadlock is that you can send some predefined video messages to other players. You can send taunt, praise, complaint, boast, threat and in case of Multiplayer matches custom chat messages.

Most of these predefined video messages are pretty funny and if you send it the AI it will also send some back although it does not really serve any purpose. In Deadlock II this can actually affect the AI relation to you so if you want to ally with someone you better not taunt him or something ^^
