DFFOO [JP][Memoria Batle 2] Aranea beatdown and the return of Paine
Well, got absolutely nothing for Cait Sith so got to get creative to cancel FT in the second part. This memoria battle was fun with a lot of threshold mechanics and quirks for you to deal with and I have tried 3 to 4 teams already.
Timeline:
00:00 Party 1
14:17 Push to 9% even though he is healing
14:56 Party 2
Paty used:
1. Weiss (VII), Aranea, Fujin
2. Yda (VII), Paine, Yuna (positional specific)
Also cleared with alternative second parties:
Shel'teus/Ignis/Vincent (VII), Paine, Yuna (positional specific)
Force:
0%: ATK/DEF down
FA: Pale Hose(?)+/++ (AOE magic BRV+HP)
++version:
- used when player has less than 12 buffs
- guaranteed hit
- dispel all player buffs that are not golden
FT: 20T
- 100% HP dmg taken healed at the end of a turn
Weakness:
FA that deals BRV dmg while buffing all party members
HP thresholds and events:
A. Wall
- BRV gain
- gain 2 framed buffs (HP/BRV dmg taken reduction)
B. Toughen up defences
- BRV gain
- cannot be broken
- BRV dmg taken massively reduced (to 1)
* can be dispelled by dealing critical BRV dmg
C. Cleansing debuffs and inflicting debuffs
D. Have a difference of light
- cleanse all (framed) debuffs
- HP heal back to 50%
E. Heartless Angel +++
- cleanse all (framed) debuffs
- reduce player to 1% HP (guaranteed HP dmg hit)
* Though this attack claims to be not able to kill the player, if you use the crystal passive A5 which makes your characters take more HP dmg, you can actually die from this attack.
Event Timeline:
QS: A
90%: C
70%: B (HP gate at 69%, drops to 29% when B is cancelled)
50%: A
30%: B, C (HP gate at 29%, drops to 9% when B is cancelled)
9%: D, E
After D happened and healed to 50%:
30/10%: E
Summary:
- Sephiroth only gets buffs and inflicts debuffs onto you in his first life.
- He only does Heartless Angel+++ after 9% and in his second life
Approach:
The main goal (and draw to having Cait Sith) is to have critical dmg despite the boss being immune to critical dmg caused by being broken at certain thresholds. So Sazh CA, Cait Sith, Cissnei and Aranea's debuff would be very good at dealing with this mechanic. Aranea will run into the problem of getting the debuff cleansed, so buff based strat works more smoothly in general in regards to cancelling event B.
Since I am running Aranea, I put a Vanille E sphere onto her just to break and get rid of the BRV/HP reduction buffs. Those buffs are not excessively debilitating, so you can also choose to ignore them if you have enough support aura. You can also consider having Vincent in party 1 just to block Sephiroth form having buffs due to his BT effect.
I used Weiss as a VII rep and a debuff evasion provider. This allows me to pretty much ignore event C. I don't even know what the debuffs are tbh. Those debuffs are not guaranteed to stick, so you can also try and dodge them with Rydia, Cater, Yuna or Lenna etc.
Having follow-ups like Cissnei probably helps you drop the HP gates without wasting a turn, but it is perfectly doable otherwise.
Dealing with Sephiroth FT:
Sephiroth's FT heals 100% of HP dmg taken on a turn and you would need a FA that gives party buffs to cancel it. Zack is one of the option from VII that can do it with his shield. I chose Paine with BT to come along to create my own buffs. The timing is delicate, because you don't want to be at or above 3 stacks when Paine and the character on her right uses their FRs. So don't BT too early if you go this route or at least check your stacks.
As long as the buff stacks jump up for the entire party when you use FR, it counts as your FA buffing the party.
Other quirks and trivia:
1. Even though Sephiroth may have entered FT and he has not yet reached 9% yet, he only heals at the end of a turn. With HP bonus retention now, if you have got really close to 9% like I was in this run, you can try a powerful move to push the boss to 9%. As long as it has once touched the threshold, it will trigger to 50% heal event still.
2. Since HP dmg is not a criteria for perfecting the stage (only not die/turns taken/parties taken), as long as you don't die you can simply ignore Heartless Angel+++.
I mentioned A5 may get you killed by gravity attack "Heartless Angel+++". I was using it to gain an advantage in phase 1 for Weiss and Aranea, since the boss resist BRV dmg when his defences are up. Then I forgot to take it off of Paine when party 2 came in.
In the end though, since Sephiroth's HP is not dropping during that event, it was pointless to care about BRV/HP dmg on that round.
3. I didn't want to Astos this because it would be too easy and I didn't want to waste the stage.
However, when it comes to carrying Cait Sith, I will not hesitate to Fujin/Iris + Astos.
4. One full lifebar of Sephiroth is 900m HP.
5. You get another +50% FG for a full synergy party 2, so you might not need a FG charger.
