The visible breaths that you can see in the cold exterior shots were all done digitally. Actors had to be filmed in freezers while they read dialogue for each scene, and the breath was then isolated and added optically to create the full effect in the film. There is also a cut scene where the fathers listen to a blizzard warning for the Central Ohio area. The areas mentioned are Franklin County, Delaware County, Ramona Falls, and Warren Valley. Franklin and Delaware counties are real and close to the Columbus metro area, but Romona Falls is actually in Oregon instead of Ohio. Warren Valley, on the other hand, is the same fictional town that Trick ‘r Treat took place in.
