Sarah Michelle Gellar ended up finding out that she was actually allergic to Japanese water while she filmed the infamous shower scene. The water caused her skin to itch, so the crew had to come up with a new way to film the scene. In the end, Sarah was dressed up in black hefty garbage bags from the waist down, and she wore a little tube top that they kept out of the shot. Originally, the film was dedicated to keeping its PG-13 rating, so the off-screen implication that Takeo stabbed Kayako repeatedly with a box cutter was omitted. It was later included in the unrated cut as he drags her body across the house while holding the box cutter.
