Some may have noticed the uploads slowing down then coming to a halt on this channel for a while. One of the reasons for that was my Switch having issues, leaving me unable to play any games on it for a while. That's fixed now, but in the interim I managed to make some videos of a PS4 challenge I played 5 years ago and never had the time to go back to. It's a No Digivolution run in Hacker's Memory, which I started soon after finishing the same challenge in the original Cyber Sleuth title. The original being notorious for its unbalanced difficulty on Hard Mode, I was rather curious what this run would be like. My original playtime was well over 60 hours when I got back to it, though a lion's share of that was waiting for DigiFarm prizes while not playing the game at all. I'd stopped in chapter 6, so I carried on from there.
While the earlygame was marked by me fighting Champion digimon with Rookies, relying first on status moves then on piercing/fixed damage attacks to win, a very special event happened then. Perhaps it was a development oversight, but it's possible to scan SuperStarmon by meeting it in the wild, and I got three of them. Ultimates can have up to three accessory slots, and this does apply to this Data specimen. They help me train very efficiently with Tactician USBs, but, more interestingly, they let me scan Digimon in boss battles that I can't revisit to farm to 100%+ immediately in one battle. When we meet an Ultimate boss, I can then convert said Digimon and train it up afterwards.
Having 3 SuperStarmons really uses up a lot of party memory at this stage of the game when you do decide to scan something in a boss battle, leaving little room for better digimon for combat - something you can get away with for now. In this fight against K, I want to scan Raremon (first digimon with Character Reversal, which was a crucial skill to have in the old Cyber Sleuth challenge) and Kurisarimon (Free Champion with huge attack).
This is the first boss battle against four Digimon, representing all four types (Vaccine, Data, Virus, Free). After the scan, I switch in the only BlackGatomon I have the party memory to use here for its fixed damage special that also sets Panic 60% of the time. It's hard to imagine something more useful at this stage of the game. I go after Raremon since it has a MT attack that can poison, but in hindsight I should've gone for Kurisarimon instead and eliminated him quickly. As long as he is alive, everybody in the opposing team has a 10% chance to proc a OHKO. I think it only applies to the basic Attack command, but I haven't played this in a while. I never encountered this issue on my attempts and only saw somebody get KO'd when restarting after messing something up after the fight. Mostly, I target whoever is weak to the respective Digimon's attacks and try to finish the battle as efficiently as possible. I didn't need to revive anybody.
The next fight is an optional mission in which you can scan MetalGreymon himself (and also the Data Champion Tankmon alongside him). He's just a stronk Vaccine Ultimate, but the first of this kind. Having already SuperStarmon-instascanned Cherrymon before, MetalGreymon completes my collection of having an Ultimate of the three types in the Vaccine/Data/Virus triangle, Cherrymon also carrying three accessory slots for instascanning. The Ultimates are nice to have but may not be the best solution to obstacles in this run, as in their scarcity they lack piercing or status moves and may want a strength/intelligence training to maximise their damage output, foregoing banking in on speed. Since the damage doesn't end up too high anyway, BlackGatomon remains king when he's not too frail to take hits from the foes.
In this fight though, he is - MetalGreymon can kill a BK Gatomon in one Giga Destroyer, and that's when he's not using Acceleration Boost (both he and Tankmon have it without actually learning it naturally with their level-up pools). So even though we now have the party memory for TWO extra BK Gatomons, I keep the initial Star lineup until MetalGreymon goes down.
Paralysis being active on both foes as a result of securing the four flags in the territory contest minigame means it could be possible to try and panick the boss with BK Gatomon as he struggles to attack, or even Bug him with Raremon so that the kitties reduce incoming damage 400% going from a type disadvantage to an advantage, but I dare not risk it. SuperStarmon is far more resilient to Giga Destroyer damage, so with some patience the battle is won.
Fixed damage attacks aren't universally preferred to regular ones, though at different points you're more likely to choose ones over another ones. Early on, Hawkwind's weak piercing attack was drivel, but getting access to Champions changed that. It'll be interesting to see how things progress as the run goes on.
