Hello. This time we're doing the map that won the PC Zone Doom level competition back in the day. Text file displays an unknown author on it for some reason, but with a little digging Gary McAndrew came out as a result of having done this level.
First scene gives out a nice visual impression compared to all of the maps so far. Although it doesn't last as strong, it's still quite a good level.
• Difficulty is quite easy overall. Mostly weaker enemies and there aren't really that many traps around to get you. Few of the monster placements can cause surprises, tho!
• Playing into the easier difficulty is the ammo, health and armor balance: You get more than enough to last you to the exit, so you shouldn't be in trouble with this one. Ton of items to pick up as well!
(Even after the rather painful start on Hard Doom, I was able to get back on my feet rather quickly.)
• Visually the start is nice. It gets a little random feeling with its theme, but generally the scale of rooms is quite alright. Poison room in yellow door area makes you remember that you're playing a '94 for sure!
• Loop back to lobby area after acquiring yellow key, was good. Could've been nice to add a way between exit area and the lobby as well.
There were no major issues. I suppose 1st secret's lift was missing a texture at the drop and the level overall was too generous, but that's about it.
Rather good and mostly chill Doom-action. As you play, you can see clues of, why the level won the contest in the past.
