Doom Classic video #37
(22.6.1994)

(Links, secrets and more information at the bottom of the description)

Hello. Continuing with PC Zone lvl finalist maps. This time with 'Mtglevel' by Dr. Martin Giblin
It's a map, that takes a number of wrong turns, but also gives you a bit of threat for survival here and there.

• Visually, it's not that great: There's a mix of control and randomness that sort of misleads the player on few spots. While there's variation to the areas, the areas themselves usually aren't pleasing the eyes.
• Difficulty is the strongest point of this map, which comes in a form of shotgunners, darkness and other traps. Dark, erratic maze is one example of this, as enemies can get very close and you can't see them, until they attack, unless you're wearing light goggles.
Misleading design and few traps might get you better than those, tho.
• Health, armor and ammo balance is favorable to player. Those are plentiful, which softens the difficulty by some. Not too many rockets, tho... and you get Plasma Gun near the end, so you don't get to use it much.

This map has many odd and bad design choices in my opinion, tho.
• Misleading start: Once you've seen the 1st room, gotten Red Key and pushed a button (what was that placement for trigger to open wall anyways?), the poison tunnel seems like the way to go... except that it's a certain death. 20 dmg ticks, long tunnel with few enemies at the end.
Instead, you open an ordinary looking wall to progress, because it gives you a radiation suit for the tunnel.
• Many rooms and openable walls exist, that you'd only find by humping the walls or by knowing that some wall must lead you to certain place... Including a required key in a secret.
• Multiple slow crushers with low ceilings. I never like these and these slow your progress through the corridor too.
• A very dark middle portion of the map, which you want Light Goggles for. You get 2x in total. (2nd is in secret-like room, which is hard to find without automap.)
Large erratic maze isn't very fun to travel through, when you've used those up.
• 3x non-secrets.
• Towards the end, 1 of 4 corners of Eye, has a teleport on it, that has a required switch in it. No visual to give a clue of it.
• Switch to open exit is in a secret.

Overall, a map with some challenge towards survival, but with many unfun and even misleading design choices.
