Doom 1: Carnage - 30.6.1994 - Vanilla & Hard Doom - 100% on Ultra-Violence - (40)
Doom Classic video #40
(30.6.1994)
(Links, secrets and more information at the bottom of the description)
Hello. Causing a small carnage through another PC Zone lvl finalist map, called Carnage and made by C.P. Wright. Another rather basic type of level, partly smaller in size and length, which is still a quick and decent blast through.
• Visually, it's somewhat basic, not bad, but in parts scale might feel a little bit tight.
• Difficulty is easy on this one and it's a short one to play through, so normally it goes well under 100 minutes to blast through.
• Ammo, health and armor is sufficient. You mostly get shells, plenty of them, but also some useful rockets. Many bullets, but you'll be most likely using pistol to spend those, unless you come across the way to access chaingun and do so successfully.
There's a bit of health lying around, but you don't lose much of it, so it's in good balance. And you get a Green Armor in this one, although it's possible to miss that (like I did during my test-run)
• Secrets are surprisingly well-hidden, although not in the best of ways for at least the double-secret. Other one poses a danger.
So, it did have few issues that I noticed:
• When talking of secrets, the 1st one (which is a double-secret, mind you) has zero clue given to it, which is generally bad way to make one... Making the player required to wall-hump every wall with space behind it.
• ...and also 2nd actual secret can be broken, because of the monsters inside it. If you open the secret wall, alert the monsters and one of them ends up using the wall from within (which can easily happen), they will change the wall's permanent 'open' status into a door, which will close afterwards.
Meaning, that if you don't trigger the secret, monsters are out of or dead in the room and you didn't get the chaingun, you won't be able to get it anymore, because the button is one-time use only.
• ...furthermore, the left pillar has no button to lower player down, if you rode the pillar up. You're stuck there
• Pits that you can't escape from, beware of those and especially the one with RL in plain sight. There's no way to lower anything on that side. Other side's tunnel is okay!
So, yeah. It's a quick blast through in rather basic, small and easy level. Just beware falling into those pits!
UPDATE: Something happened to the previous description, when I came back to this still being opened. Saw some extra space, which I deleted and then saved.
I realized that description had lost some information, so I re-did the end of it quickly, along with time stamps. Hopefully it's sorted!
