Doom II: Hell on Earth MAP10: Refueling Base (Pistol Start, 100% Secrets)
Source Port: DSDA-Doom
This map is rough—it’s pretty huge and it has the highest enemy count in the game, mostly hitscanners which are pretty deadly in hordes. If you take a good route though, you’ll be well armed to kill everything in the map without that much trouble.
The huge dark room with all of the hitscanners should be visited early in your route, as you’ll get a berserk pack, a supercharge, and plenty of ammo. The Pinky secret here contains a warp to a Cyberdemon (!!) so save that for the end. I also get the BFG early on which helps me with some of the bigger mobs.
Pain Elementals, Revenants, and Arachnotrons are found in spades here, and this is the first map where they’re all really a threat. Take advantage of infighting whenever you can, and try not to stay in front of them too long. The Pain Elemental especially can be prevented from attacking by repeatedly taking cover and peeking out to shoot with a specific rhythm. If you’re really in a pinch, the regular shotgun fires just quickly enough to repeatedly stun a Pain Elemental as well.
One cool thing about this map, it was actually a Tom Hall map meant for Doom 1. It was finished and used in this game by Sandy Petersen.
